TP grading scale

Temasek Polytechnic's grading system, as published by its School of Business, maps marks to grades and grade points like this:

The Z grade is TP's distinction: reserved for up to the top 5% of candidates in a subject and worth the same 4.0 as an A.

How TP calculates cGPA

TP computes a semester GPA and a cumulative GPA (cGPA) at the end of each term, both weighted by credit units.

cGPA = Σ (Grade point × Credit units) ÷ Σ Credit units

Worked example

A Year 1 business student with five subjects:

cGPA = 60.0 ÷ 17 = 3.53

Semester GPA 3.53 — above the 3.50 Diploma with Merit line, provided the student also lands in the top 10% at graduation.

Diploma with Merit at TP

TP's Diploma with Merit (DWM) has four conditions, all of which must be met:

Duration	Course completed within six semesters
Record	No failed subject and no P (non-graded pass) grade

A single P grade disqualifies you from both DWM and the Director's List. TP has not published the Director's List GPA threshold on its public pages.

Retakes and failed subjects at TP

When you retake a failed subject, the new grade replaces the old one in the GPA calculation — the original F (0 points) no longer drags the average. The transcript still lists every subject and grade taken, so the fail remains visible to universities and employers even though the cGPA recovers.

Using your TP GPA for university admission

NUS and NTU publish an Indicative Grade Profile for polytechnic applicants each year. NTU's AY2025-26 figures were 3.78–3.98 for Computer Science and 3.65–3.91 for Business — the 10th to 90th percentile of admitted poly graduates, not cut-offs. Plan the semesters you have left with the target GPA planner.

TP GPA FAQ

What is the Z grade at Temasek Poly?

Z is TP's distinction grade, awarded to up to the top 5% of candidates in a subject. It carries 4.0 grade points, the same as an A.

What GPA do you need for Diploma with Merit at TP?

A cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, a top-10% finish in the graduating cohort, completion within six semesters, and no failed or P-graded subject.

Does a retake replace my failed grade at TP?

Yes. The retake grade replaces the original in the GPA calculation, but both attempts still appear on the transcript.

Does a P grade hurt my TP GPA?

It is counted at 1.0 grade points, so it lowers a GPA above 1.0 — and it disqualifies you from Diploma with Merit and the Director's List.
