Singapore GPA Calculator & Scale Guide
Singapore runs three GPA systems at once — a 5.0 scale at most universities, a 4.0 scale at SMU, the polytechnics and ITE — and they do not convert linearly. This page lines them up and links to a calculator and guide for every school.
Key takeaways
- Universities (NUS, NTU, SUTD, SIT, SUSS) grade out of 5.0; SMU is the exception on a 4.0-based scale.
- Polytechnics and ITE grade out of 4.0, but polys use half-point steps (B+ 3.5) while ITE uses whole points (B 3).
- University honours start at 3.00 and Highest Distinction at 4.50 on the 5.0 scale; polytechnic Diploma with Merit typically needs 3.0–3.5 plus a top-10% finish.
- There is no official Singapore-to-US conversion — quote your GPA with its scale (e.g. 4.2 / 5.0) and use the honours band when a form needs a category.
The three Singapore GPA scales side by side
Every Singapore institution computes GPA the same way — the credit-weighted mean of grade points — but the grade point tables differ. Here is the same letter grade on each scale:
| Grade | NUS / NTU / SUTD / SIT / SUSS (5.0) | SMU (4.0) | Polytechnics (4.0) | ITE (4.0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 5.0 | 4.3 | 4.0 (A / DIST / Z) | 4.0 (A) |
| A | 5.0 | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| A- | 4.5 | 3.7 | — | — |
| B+ | 4.0 | 3.3 | 3.5 | — |
| B | 3.5 | 3.0 | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| B- | 3.0 | 2.7 | — | — |
| C+ | 2.5 | 2.3 | 2.5 | — |
| C | 2.0 | 2.0 | 2.0 | 2.0 |
| D+ | 1.5 | 1.3 | 1.5 | — |
| D | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| F | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
SUTD adds an A+ at 5.3 on top of the 5.0 scale (see the SUTD GPA guide), and SP has a D- at 0.5. Because the tables are not proportional — a B is 70% of the maximum at NUS but 75% at a polytechnic — you cannot convert between them by simple division. The main calculator has a preset for every school in its dropdown.

Honours and merit bands
All 5.0-scale universities use the same five bands for the final cumulative GPA: Honours (Highest Distinction) 4.50–5.00, Honours (Distinction) 4.00–4.49, Honours (Merit) 3.50–3.99, Honours 3.00–3.49, Pass 2.00–2.99. SMU uses Latin honours instead. Polytechnics do not classify diplomas but award Diploma with Merit to roughly the top 10% of a cohort above a GPA floor (3.0 at SP, 3.50 at TP).
From polytechnic to university: the Indicative Grade Profile
NUS and NTU each publish an Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) — the 10th and 90th percentile poly GPA of applicants who were offered a place in the previous exercise, per programme. NTU's AY2025-26 profile: Computer Science 3.78–3.98, Business 3.65–3.91, Accountancy 3.63–3.92. NUS's last published profile listed Computer Science at 3.84–3.99 and Law at 3.82–3.98. Both universities stress the IGP is not a cut-off; it moves with the applicant pool each year.
Converting a Singapore GPA for overseas applications
Neither the universities nor World Education Services publish a fixed Singapore-to-US table; WES evaluates each transcript individually. Two unofficial shortcuts circulate: linear scaling (5.0-scale GPA ÷ 1.25, so 4.5 → 3.6) and band mapping (Highest Distinction ≈ UK First Class ≈ US "A"). NUS Law explicitly aligned its honours classes with UK universities, which is why the band approach is usually the safer one. When a form insists on a 4.0 number, use the GPA scale converter and state the original scale next to it.
Singapore GPA FAQ
What GPA scale does Singapore use?
Most universities (NUS, NTU, SUTD, SIT, SUSS) use a 5.0 scale. SMU uses a 4.0-based scale with A+ at 4.3. All five polytechnics and ITE use a 4.0 scale.
Is a 4.0 GPA in Singapore good?
It depends on the scale. On the university 5.0 scale, 4.0 is the start of Honours (Distinction). At a polytechnic or ITE, 4.0 is the maximum — a perfect record.
How do I convert Singapore GPA to US GPA?
There is no official conversion. Unofficially, divide a 5.0-scale GPA by 1.25 for a rough 4.0 equivalent, or map by honours band. Always state the original scale on applications.
What is a good poly GPA for NUS or NTU?
The indicative grade profiles of admitted poly graduates for competitive courses (Computer Science, Business, Law) sit between about 3.6 and 3.99. Less competitive programmes admit from lower GPAs; check the current IGP for your course.
