CGPA Calculator

Three tools in one page: turn semester SGPAs into a cumulative CGPA, calculate CGPA from course grades on the 10-point, 4.0 or 5.0 scale, and convert CGPA to percentage or to a GPA out of 4.

Key takeaways

  • CGPA is your cumulative grade point average across every semester; SGPA is one semester. Both are credit-weighted.
  • CGPA from SGPAs: Σ (SGPA × credits) ÷ Σ credits — averaging SGPAs only works when every semester has the same credits.
  • CGPA to percentage depends on who issued the CGPA: CBSE uses × 9.5, VTU's newer schemes and Anna University × 10, VTU's 2015–2018 schemes and JNTUH (CGPA − 0.75) × 10.
  • CGPA to GPA out of 4 has no official formula; CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 is the common approximation.

CGPA:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits. If every semester has the same credits this equals the plain average of your SGPAs; if not, the credit-weighted figure is the one on your transcript.

Grade points follow the UGC (India) 10-point letter scheme, the UGC Bangladesh 4.0 scale, the US 4.0 scale or the Singapore 5.0 scale. Your university may publish its own table — check the scale reference or use the full calculator for other scales and transcript upload.

3. CGPA to percentage and CGPA to GPA (4.0) converter

Percentage = GPA out of 4.0 (linear, unofficial) = GPA out of 5.0 (linear, unofficial) =

The percentage formula is set by your board or university, not by the CGPA itself — pick the one on your conversion certificate. The 4.0 and 5.0 figures are straight proportional scaling; no Indian or Bangladeshi body publishes an official conversion to those scales, and credential evaluators such as WES do their own.

What CGPA means

CGPA — Cumulative Grade Point Average — is the grade point average of every course you have completed, weighted by credits, across all semesters. Indian universities following the UGC Choice Based Credit System report it on a 10-point scale; Bangladeshi universities on a 4.0 scale; Malaysian and Pakistani universities on 4.0; Singapore's NUS and NTU on 5.0 (NTU calls it CGPA, NUS simply GPA). The number is the same idea everywhere: total quality points divided by total credits.

The word you see on a US transcript — "GPA" — is normally already cumulative. So CGPA to GPA is really a question of converting between scales (10 → 4, 4 → 4 with different letter cut-offs), not between two kinds of average. Our scale reference has the full tables.

The CGPA formula

UGC's CBCS guidelines define both figures the same way:

SGPA = Σ (Ci × Gi) ÷ Σ Ci

CGPA = Σ (Ci × Si) ÷ Σ Ci

where Ci is the credits of a course (or the total credits of a semester), Gi the grade point earned in that course and Si the SGPA of that semester. Tool 1 implements the second line; Tool 2 implements the first line over all your courses at once, which gives the same answer.

Worked example — SGPA to CGPA

SemesterCreditsSGPASGPA × Credits
1228.20180.4
2247.60182.4
3268.90231.4
4209.10182.0
Total92776.2

CGPA = 776.2 ÷ 92 = 8.44

The plain average of the four SGPAs is 8.45 — close here because the credit loads are similar. With a 16-credit internship semester and a 28-credit core semester the two methods drift apart by a tenth or more, and only the weighted figure matches your transcript.

SSC and HSC results use a separate school-board GPA out of 5.0 (A+ = 5.00) — not a university CGPA, and not what Tool 2 computes.

CGPA to percentage

A CGPA has no intrinsic percentage. Each board or university publishes a multiplier for its own certificates, and employers ask for the figure from your conversion certificate, not a generic one. The three most-used formulas, side by side:

CGPA (10)× 9.5 (CBSE)× 10(CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (VTU)≈ GPA / 4.0≈ GPA / 5.0

4.038.0%40%32.5%1.602.00

CBSE's 2010 circular introducing grade-based Class X results states: "Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA" — note the word indicative; CBSE never treated it as an exact mark. VTU publishes its own rule and it changed by scheme: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for the 2015, 2017 and 2018 schemes, CGPA × 10 from the 2021 scheme onward. The UGC's CBCS guidelines define SGPA and CGPA but give no national percentage formula, which is why the multiplier always comes from your own university. The last two columns are proportional scaling to 4.0 and 5.0 for a rough sense of equivalence only.

CGPA FAQ

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average: the credit-weighted average of the grade points from every course you have taken so far, across all semesters. It is the single figure on your final transcript.

What is the difference between GPA, SGPA and CGPA?

GPA is the generic term for a grade point average over any set of courses. SGPA (Semester GPA) covers one semester. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) covers all semesters to date. In the US, "GPA" usually already means the cumulative figure.

How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?

Multiply each semester's SGPA by that semester's credits, add the products, and divide by the total credits. Only average the SGPAs directly if every semester carried the same credits — that is the UGC formula CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ Σ Ci.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

Use the formula your board or university publishes. CBSE set an indicative Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 for its grade-based results; VTU (2021+ schemes) and Anna University use CGPA × 10; VTU's 2015–2018 schemes and JNTU Hyderabad use (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Tool 3 above applies each formula, and the table below lists the results side by side.

How do I convert CGPA to GPA out of 4?

There is no official conversion. The usual approximation is proportional: GPA = CGPA ÷ 10 × 4, so a 8.5 CGPA ≈ 3.4. Evaluators such as WES convert transcripts course by course, weighting each US-equivalent grade by credits — not with a formula — so quote your CGPA and its scale rather than a self-converted number.

What is a good CGPA?

On the Indian 10-point scale, 8.0 and above is generally considered first class with distinction territory and 7.0+ first class at most universities; recruiters commonly screen at 6.0–7.5. On the Bangladesh 4.0 scale, 3.50+ is strong and 3.00 is the common cut-off for postgraduate admission.

How is CGPA calculated in Bangladesh?

Universities under the UGC Bangladesh uniform scale award A+ 4.00 (80–100), A 3.75, A- 3.50, B+ 3.25, B 3.00, B- 2.75, C+ 2.50, C 2.25, D 2.00 and F 0, and weight each course by its credits. Choose the Bangladesh scale in Tool 2. SSC/HSC results use a separate 5.0 GPA scale.
