NTU grading scale

NTU grades every letter-graded course on a 5-point scale. Only A+ to F carry grade points; P (Pass), NR (No Record), EX (Exempted), TC (Transfer credit), IP (In Progress) and LOA are excluded from CGPA.

Unlike some universities, NTU's CGPA "represents the grade average of all courses including failed courses" — an F stays at 0 points in the denominator until you convert it to No Record.

How NTU calculates CGPA

Each course carries Academic Units (AU); most are 3 AU. NTU computes a semester GPA, a Year GPA (YGPA) and the cumulative CGPA with the same formula, differing only in which semesters are included.

CGPA = Σ (Grade point × AU) ÷ Σ AU

Worked example

A first-year Computer Science student with three 3-AU courses, a 2-AU course and a 1-AU course:

CGPA = 52.5 ÷ 12 = 4.38

Semester GPA 4.38 — inside the Honours (Distinction) band. If this were the whole record, CGPA would equal the semester GPA; from semester two onwards the CGPA pools all AU across semesters instead of averaging semester GPAs.

NTU degree classification

Section 6.6 of the handbook maps the final CGPA to the class of honours:

Extra conditions apply by college: Engineering and CCDS programmes need CGPA ≥ 4.50 and at least B+ in the Final Year Project for Highest Distinction; Science needs ≥ A- in the FYP for Highest Distinction (or CGPA ≥ 4.00 plus a pass for Distinction); Humanities and Social Sciences students who skip the FYP are capped below Distinction.

Flexible Grading Option (FGO)

The FGO is NTU's pass/fail mechanism. After results are released you may convert an earned A–D grade to Pass (excluded from CGPA) or an F to No Record (hidden on external transcripts). The choice is irrevocable. Quotas: 21 AU for 3-year programmes, 24 AU for 4- and 5-year full-time programmes (21 AU part-time), with at most 12 AU from Major Core / ICC / MPE courses. The FYP, internships and LKCMedicine are excluded.

Because an F is otherwise carried at 0 points forever, converting a failed course to No Record is usually the highest-value use of your FGO quota.

Dean's List and academic standing

Dean's List: top 5% of the cohort and semester GPA of at least 4.50, computed on raw grades before any FGO conversion, with at least 12 AU of letter-graded courses that semester (6 AU part-time).

Academic standing: a CGPA below 2.00 triggers Academic Warning; a second consecutive semester below 2.00 means Academic Probation; a third means Academic Termination (one appeal within two weeks of results). Overloading requires CGPA ≥ 2.00, and Accelerated Bachelor's students must hold CGPA ≥ 4.00.

When are NTU results released?

Semester 2 results have recently been released in early June (2 June 2025, 9.30 am for the last cycle we could verify), with degree conferment on 30 June or 15 July. Semester 1 results precede the 31 January conferment date. NTU announces exact dates each semester through the student portal.

NTU GPA FAQ

What is a good CGPA at NTU?

CGPA 4.00 and above is Honours (Distinction); 4.50 and above is Honours (Highest Distinction), the top band. The Dean's List bar is a 4.50 semester GPA plus a top-5% finish.

Does a failed course affect my NTU CGPA?

Yes — an F is counted as 0 grade points across its AU, and stays in the CGPA until you convert it to No Record with the Flexible Grading Option (subject to your AU quota).

How do I convert NTU CGPA to the 4.0 scale?

NTU publishes no official conversion and WES evaluates transcripts individually. A linear approximation (CGPA ÷ 1.25, so 4.5 → 3.6) is common but unofficial. Quote your CGPA out of 5.0 and let the receiving institution convert it.

Is the NTU scale the same as NUS?

The grade points and the five honours bands are identical. The difference is the pass/fail mechanism: NTU's Flexible Grading Option versus the NUS S/U option. See the NUS GPA guide.

What GPA do polytechnic graduates need for NTU?

NTU publishes an Indicative Grade Profile per programme showing the 10th–90th percentile GPA of poly applicants offered a place — for AY2025-26 Computer Science was 3.78–3.98 and Business 3.65–3.91. It is a reference, not a cut-off.
