SUTD grading scale

SUTD's public site does not reproduce its grade table; the points below are those printed on SUTD transcripts and used by every SUTD-specific calculator, and SUTD's own credit-transfer rules confirm the anchor value C+ = 2.5:

The 5.3 A+ is what sets SUTD apart from NUS, NTU, SIT and SUSS, where A+ and A are both 5.0. It rewards top marks in graded subjects but does not change the honours thresholds.

How SUTD calculates GPA

Once a subject has a letter grade, the GPA is the familiar credit-weighted mean. Subjects taken Pass/No Record contribute credits toward graduation but nothing to the GPA.

GPA = Σ (Grade point × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

Worked example

A Term 2 Freshmore student who chose to keep all five graded subjects:

GPA = 267.6 ÷ 60 = 4.46

GPA 4.46 — inside the Honours (Distinction) band, and the A+ at 5.3 adds about 0.06 over what the same record would score at NUS.

SUTD honours classification

SUTD follows the same five bands as the other 5.0-scale universities (widely reported; SUTD's official classification page is portal-only):

Grade-free Freshmore subjects

SUTD's official Freshmore page states: "All subjects in Term 1 are grade-free (Pass/No record), and students can further choose up to four more subjects from Terms 2 and 3 to be grade-free." That is up to a full year of subjects that never touch your GPA — more generous than NUS's 32-Unit S/U quota in first-year terms, and closer to NTU's 24-AU Flexible Grading Option overall.

What GPA does SUTD require for admission?

SUTD publishes an Indicative Grade Profile for A-Level applicants and a separate admission page for polytechnic diploma holders; it does not publish a single cut-off GPA. In practice, SUTD's own scholarship pages use CGPA 3.5/5.0 as a good-standing benchmark for continuing awards, and SUTD-administered programmes cite a minimum CGPA of 2.5/5.0 for eligibility. Polytechnic applicants should compare their GPA with the NUS/NTU indicative profiles (roughly 3.6–3.99 for engineering and computing) as a proxy.

Why can an SUTD GPA be above 5.0?

Because an A+ is worth 5.3 grade points at SUTD, a student with A+ in every graded subject would have a GPA of 5.3. The nominal scale is still described as 5.0.

Do Freshmore subjects count in the SUTD GPA?

Term 1 subjects are all Pass/No Record and never count. You may also make up to four Term 2–3 subjects grade-free; anything left letter-graded does count.

What GPA do you need for SUTD?
