Ngee Ann Poly GPA Calculator & Grading System

The NP grading scale as published on the Ngee Ann Polytechnic assessment page — AD distinction, grade points, the GPA formula and pass-only grades — with a calculator preset to the NP 4.0 scale.

Key takeaways

  • NP uses a 4.0 scale: AD (Distinction), A+ and A are all 4.0; B+ 3.5; B 3.0; C+ 2.5; C 2.0; D+ 1.5; D 1.0; F 0.
  • GPA = Σ (credit units × grade points) ÷ credit units of graded modules. PM and PX pass grades have no points and are excluded.
  • Distinction (AD) is limited to around 5% of the students who sat each module.
  • NP does not publish Diploma with Merit thresholds on its public site; the widely quoted figure is cGPA 3.5 plus a top-10% finish, which you should confirm in the student handbook.

NP grading scale

Ngee Ann Polytechnic's assessment page lists the following grades and grade points (NP does not publish mark ranges for each grade):

GradeGrade pointNotes
AD4.0Distinction — about 5% of each module cohort
A+4.0Excellent
A4.0Excellent
B+3.5Very good
B3.0Very good
C+2.5Good
C2.0Good
D+1.5Pass
D1.0Pass
F0.0Fail

Two further grades carry no points: PM (Pass with Merit) and PX (Pass in modules graded Pass/Fail only). Both are excluded from the GPA.

How NP calculates GPA

NP's published formula is for the semester: Current GPA = Σ (credit units × grade points) ÷ total current-semester credit units of graded modules. The cumulative GPA on your transcript applies the same weighting across all semesters.

GPA = Σ (Grade point × Credit units) ÷ Σ Credit units

Worked example

A Year 1 IT student with five graded modules (a PX module is left out):

ModuleCredit unitsGradePointsQuality Pts
Fundamentals of Programming4A4.016.0
Business Statistics4B3.012.0
Web Development4A+4.016.0
Communication & Media3C+2.57.5
Personal Development2B+3.57.0
Total1758.5

GPA = 58.5 ÷ 17 = 3.44

Semester GPA 3.44. Because A+ and A are both 4.0 at NP, chasing an A+ does not change the GPA — only the AD label distinguishes top scorers.

Diploma with Merit and Director's List at NP

NP's public site confirms that Diploma with Merit and Director's List exist (both feature in the annual graduation e-book) but the qualifying GPA is only in the student handbook behind the NP portal. Third-party calculators quote cGPA ≥ 3.5 and top 10% of the graduating cohort for Diploma with Merit — treat that as unconfirmed until you check the handbook.

Using your NP GPA for university admission

NUS and NTU publish an Indicative Grade Profile (IGP) for polytechnic applicants — the 10th to 90th percentile GPA of those offered a place. NTU's AY2025-26 figures: Computer Science 3.78–3.98, Business 3.65–3.91, Accountancy 3.63–3.92. The IGP is a reference, not a cut-off; see the Singapore GPA overview for how poly GPA compares with the university 5.0 scale.

NP GPA FAQ

What GPA is Distinction at Ngee Ann Poly?

AD (Distinction) is not a fixed mark — NP awards it to roughly the top 5% of students who sat a module. It carries 4.0 grade points, the same as A+ and A.

Do PM or PX grades count in my NP GPA?

No. PM (Pass with Merit) and PX (Pass in a Pass/Fail module) carry no grade points and are excluded from the GPA calculation.

When does Ngee Ann Poly release GPA results?

NP does not publish results dates on its public site; they are announced through the student portal each semester. Check the NP student portal or your school's notices.

What is a good NP GPA for university?

For competitive NUS/NTU courses the indicative profiles of admitted poly graduates run from about 3.6 to 3.99. A 3.5 is a commonly cited Diploma with Merit benchmark, though NP has not published that threshold publicly.
