Frequently Asked Questions

What is GPA and how is it calculated? +

GPA (Grade Point Average) is a number that summarizes your academic performance. Each course is worth a certain number of credits (or units), and each grade you earn converts to a grade point on a fixed scale.

The formula is: GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits

Example on a 4.0 scale: if you got A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and B (3.0) in a 2-credit course, your GPA = (4.0×3 + 3.0×2) ÷ 5 = 18÷5 = 3.60.

CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is simply your GPA calculated across all semesters combined, not just one term.

What is the difference between 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, and 7.0 scales? +

Different countries and universities use different maximum grade point values — a higher scale number doesn't mean better grades. A 3.5/4.0 and a 4.4/5.0 can represent the same academic standing.

  • 4.0 Scale — Standard in the US and Canada. A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0.
  • 4.3 Scale — Used by some North American universities. Adds A+ = 4.3 on top of the 4.0 base.
  • 4.5 Scale (Korea) — Common in South Korean universities. A+ = 4.5, A = 4.0, B+ = 3.5, and so on.
  • 5.0 Scale (Singapore / Malaysia) — Used by NUS, NTU, and many Malaysian universities. A+ = 5.0.
  • 7.0 Scale (Australia) — Used by most Australian universities. HD (High Distinction) = 7, D (Distinction) = 6, C (Credit) = 5, P (Pass) = 4.
  • 10.0 Scale (India / Pakistan) — CGPA out of 10, common in IITs and many South Asian institutions.
  • 20-Point Scale (France / Lebanon) — Marks are out of 20. 10 is typically the passing threshold; 16+ is considered excellent.
What is considered a good GPA? +

There's no universal answer — it depends on your scale, institution, and goal. General benchmarks on a 4.0 scale:

  • 3.7 – 4.0 — Excellent (Summa Cum Laude range). Competitive for top graduate programs and scholarships.
  • 3.3 – 3.69 — Good. Meets requirements for most graduate school and scholarship applications.
  • 3.0 – 3.29 — Acceptable. Some competitive programs may require higher.
  • Below 3.0 — May be below average at selective schools; many graduate programs require at least 3.0 to apply.

For the Australian 7-point scale: a GPA of 5.0+ (Credit) is solid; 6.0+ (Distinction) is competitive for postgraduate applications.

For the Singapore 5.0 scale: 4.0+ is typically the Dean's List threshold at NUS/NTU.

How do I convert my GPA from one scale to another? +

The safest method is percentage-based conversion: divide your GPA by the max of your current scale to get a percentage, then multiply by the target max.

Example: 3.6 on a 4.0 scale → 3.6 ÷ 4.0 = 90% → on a 5.0 scale: 90% × 5.0 = 4.5.

This is an approximation. Universities and employers often use their own official conversion tables, so always check the target institution's policy. WES (World Education Services) is a widely used standard for US/Canadian graduate admissions conversions.

How does the GPA Planner work? +

The Cumulative GPA Planner tells you what average GPA you need to earn in your remaining courses to reach your target CGPA by graduation.

Enter: your current CGPA, credits completed so far, your target CGPA, and total credits required to graduate. The tool calculates the required average grade point for every remaining credit.

The Semester Planner is a shorter-range version: enter your current CGPA, credits done, target CGPA, and credits you're taking this semester — it shows the exact GPA you need to earn this term only.

Click Import from Calculator to automatically pre-fill both planners with the grades you've already entered in the Calculator tab.

Does this calculator save my data? +

No data is ever sent to any server. All calculations happen entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your course names, grades, and credits are never stored, logged, or shared with anyone. Close the tab and everything is cleared.
