SP grading scale

Singapore Polytechnic publishes its grading system in the student handbook. Marks map to letter grades and grade points as follows:

P	0.5	Non-graded pass
F	0.0	Below 45

SP is unusual among the polytechnics in having a D- grade (0.5) and in counting a non-graded pass (P) at 0.5 rather than excluding it.

How SP calculates cGPA

SP computes both a semester GPA (sGPA) and a cumulative GPA (cGPA). Both are weighted by module credit units. Since AY2024/25, SP drops up to two elective modules from the cGPA when that improves the result — so your cGPA can be higher than a raw average of every module.

cGPA = Σ (Grade point × Credit units) ÷ Σ Credit units

Worked example

A Year 1 engineering student with five modules of different credit weights:

cGPA = 62.0 ÷ 18 = 3.44

sGPA 3.44. The 5-credit Programming module lifts the average more than the 2-credit Communication module can — credit units are the weights.

SP academic awards

SP does not classify diplomas into honours bands, but two awards depend on GPA:

Diploma with Merit	cGPA ≥ 3.0, top 10% of the graduating course cohort, good conduct
Director's Honour Roll	GPA ≥ 3.0 for that assessment year (not cumulative), generally within the top 10%, good conduct

SP results release dates

SP publishes the release schedule in the student handbook. For AY2026/27, Semester 1 results were released on 21 September 2026 (staggered by school between 9 am and 1 pm) and vacation-term results on 28 September 2026. Appeals follow the deadlines listed on the same page.

Failed and repeated modules at SP

Failed core and option modules must be repeated; a failed elective may be replaced with a different elective. Passed modules cannot be retaken to improve a grade. Repeating a module and failing again can lead to removal from the course. Every attempt stays on the transcript.

Using your SP GPA for university admission

NUS and NTU publish an Indicative Grade Profile per programme: the 10th–90th percentile GPA of polytechnic applicants who received offers. For NTU's AY2025-26 intake, Computer Science was 3.78–3.98 and Business 3.65–3.91. Treat these as reference points, not cut-offs, and plan the GPA you need with the target GPA planner.

SP GPA FAQ

What is a good GPA in Singapore Poly?

A cGPA of 3.0 makes you eligible for Diploma with Merit if you also finish in the top 10% of your course. For local university admission, recent NUS and NTU indicative profiles for competitive courses sit between roughly 3.6 and 3.99.

What is the DIST grade at SP?

DIST (Distinction) is awarded at the assessment board's discretion to top scorers in a module. It carries the same 4.0 grade points as an A but is shown separately on the transcript.

Does a P grade affect my SP GPA?

Yes, unlike at most polytechnics. SP counts a non-graded pass (P) at 0.5 grade points, so it pulls the GPA down. Check with your school whether a module is graded or pass/fail before assuming it is neutral.

Can SP exclude my worst modules from the cGPA?

From AY2024/25, up to two elective modules can be excluded from the cGPA if doing so raises it. Core modules are never excluded.
