SMU GPA Calculator & Grading System
Singapore Management University is the one local university on a 4-point scale. This page has the official grade-to-mark table, the GPA formula, the Latin honours bands and Dean's List rule — with a calculator preset to the SMU scale.
Key takeaways
- SMU grades on a 4-point scale with A+ = 4.3: A 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, F 0.
- Every grade has a published mark range — A+ is 86 and above, A is 83–85, a pass (D) starts at 50.
- Latin honours by cumulative GPA: Summa Cum Laude 3.80+, Magna 3.60, Cum Laude 3.40, High Merit 3.20, Merit 3.00.
- Internships and Work-Study Electives are Pass/Fail and do not enter the GPA; Dean's List needs 3.70 across two consecutive terms with no grade below C.

| Course | Credit units | Grade |

GPA: – / 4.3
SMU counts most courses as 1 credit unit (CU), so leave credits at 1 unless a course is 0.5 or 2 CU. A+ is worth 4.3, which is why a perfect record can exceed 4.0. For multi-semester tracking, transcript upload and target-GPA planning, use the full GPA calculator.
SMU grading scale
SMU's official grading table, as published in its programme factsheet, ties each letter grade to both a grade point and a mark range:
| Grade | Grade point | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.3 | 86 and above |
| A | 4.0 | 83 – 85 |
| A- | 3.7 | 80 – 82 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 77 – 79 |
| B | 3.0 | 74 – 76 |
| B- | 2.7 | 70 – 73 |
| C+ | 2.3 | 66 – 69 |
| C | 2.0 | 63 – 65 |
| C- | 1.7 | 60 – 62 |
| D+ | 1.3 | 53 – 59 |
| D | 1.0 | 50 – 52 |
| F | 0.0 | 49 and below |
The 4.3 for A+ means the theoretical maximum GPA is 4.3, not 4.0 — a student with straight A+ grades reports a GPA above 4.0. Internships, Work-Study Electives and some exchange credits are graded Pass/Fail and excluded from the GPA.
How SMU calculates GPA
SMU counts courses in credit units (most are 1 CU) and weights grade points by CU. Because nearly every course is 1 CU, an SMU GPA is close to a plain average of your grade points — unlike NUS or NTU where 2-Unit and 4-Unit courses pull with different force.
GPA = Σ (Grade point × Credit units) ÷ Σ Credit units
Worked example
A first-term business student with five 1-CU courses:
| Course | Credit units | Grade | Points | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Analytics Foundation | 1 | A | 4.0 | 4.0 |
| Business, Government & Society | 1 | B+ | 3.3 | 3.3 |
| Managerial Economics | 1 | A- | 3.7 | 3.7 |
| Writing & Reasoning | 1 | B | 3.0 | 3.0 |
| Financial Accounting | 1 | A+ | 4.3 | 4.3 |
| Total | 5 | 18.3 |
GPA = 18.3 ÷ 5 = 3.66
Term GPA 3.66 — above the 3.70 Dean's List line and inside the Magna Cum Laude band. The A+ at 4.3 is what lifts it past a plain A average.
SMU cum laude and merit awards
SMU does not use the Honours (Highest Distinction) bands of the other local universities. Its commencement awards are based on the final cumulative GPA:
| Award | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Summa Cum Laude | 3.80 and above |
| Magna Cum Laude | 3.60 – 3.79 |
| Cum Laude | 3.40 – 3.59 |
| High Merit | 3.20 – 3.39 |
| Merit | 3.00 – 3.19 |
Because the scale tops out at 4.3, these bands sit lower than the 5.0-scale honours bands; a 3.80 at SMU is roughly the top 5–10% of a cohort rather than a Second Upper equivalent. When comparing with NUS/NTU applicants, employers generally look at the award name, not the number.
SMU Dean's List
The Lee Kong Chian School of Business publishes the rule most schools follow: a cumulative GPA of at least 3.70 across two consecutive regular terms in the same academic year (Term 3 excluded), no grade below C, at least three letter-graded course units each term, no Incomplete grades and no disciplinary record.
SMU GPA vs the NUS/NTU 5.0 scale
There is no official conversion between SMU's 4.3 scale and the 5.0 scale used by NUS, NTU, SUTD, SIT and SUSS, and the two are not proportional (a B is 3.0/4.3 ≈ 70% at SMU but 3.5/5.0 = 70% at NUS — coincidentally close, but an A is 93% versus 100%). If a form asks for a 4.0-scale GPA, SMU students can quote their GPA directly and state the 4.3 maximum. See the Singapore GPA overview for the side-by-side table.
SMU GPA FAQ
What is a good GPA at SMU?
A cumulative GPA of 3.40 earns Cum Laude, 3.60 Magna Cum Laude and 3.80 Summa Cum Laude. The Dean's List bar is 3.70 over two consecutive terms.
Is the SMU GPA out of 4.0 or 4.3?
The scale is a 4-point system, but A+ carries 4.3 grade points, so the maximum possible GPA is 4.3.
What mark do I need for an A at SMU?
An A is 83–85 marks and an A+ is 86 and above. The mark ranges are published in SMU's grading table; a D (pass) starts at 50.
Do internships count in the SMU GPA?
No. Internships and Work-Study Electives are graded Pass/Fail and are excluded from the GPA.
How does an SMU GPA compare to NUS or NTU?
They are on different scales (4.3 versus 5.0) with no official conversion. Compare by award band instead: Summa Cum Laude is SMU's top tier, as Honours (Highest Distinction) is at NUS and NTU.
